Review:

One of the first anime brought to you by Watase Yuu, Fushigi Yuugi incorporates an old Chinese legend with comedy and romance. This is probably her best anime that's come out for the creator, and is guaranteed to be a tear jerker as well as an anime that will make you laugh at the right times.

Set in ancient China, Fushigi Yuugi is based on the old Chinese legend of the Universe of the Four Gods. Miaka and her best friend Yui, are in the library reading a mysterious book (The Universe of the Four Gods), when they are transported to that world. Yui goes back to the present as quickly as she came to the ancient world, but Miaka is left behind. Here, she meets Tamahome, who is later to become the protector of Suzaku no Miko (Miaka).

The story follows the quest of Miaka to summon the God Suzaku to save the country of Konan. Hotohori, the country's kind but narcisstic Emperor is also one of the protectors of Suzaku no Miko. Throughout Miaka's adventures, she slowly gathers all of the Suzaku Shichisenshi (Suzaku 7 Soldiers/Protectors) and together they fight the Seiryuu side, who wants to call their own God to reek evil. The twist comes when Yui is transported back to China when Miaka decides to come back. Yui undergoes a terrible ordeal, and because of this, she becomes the Seiryuu no Miko, Miaka's enemy.

Throughout this story, a huge love triangle appears. (^^;;) Tamahome and Miaka fall in love, but Hotohori loves Miaka too, and eventually Nuriko does. *sigh* That's probably the only problem with the series. The love story between Tamahome and Miaka is dragged out throughout the whole series, sometimes making you wish that Tamahome and Miaka would just stay together and stop hurting eachother! (such is love........ :P). Apart from this, the anime is brilliant. You really get attached to the characters, and when some of them die, all you can do is grab a few tissues and cry your heart out.

For an anime with a mixture of romance, magic and comedy (hence the deliberate super deformations of the characters), Fushigi Yuugi is an anime that you cannot miss to watch.
