Rumiko Takahashi has again
created another anime masterpiece following her works of Ranma
1/2, Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, and Inuyasha
is, I think, guaranteed to please all of her fans.
Inuyasha follow the life of an ordinary school girl, Kagome
who accidentally falls into a well at her Grandfather's shrine
trying to save the family cat. Kagome is then transported into
another time of conflict and war. She finds herself face to face
with a half youkai (half monster), Inuyasha, a half human half
demon, who is pinned to a tree by a magical arrow which keeps
him asleep. Kagome finds herself in a lot of trouble, and therefore
decides to take the arrow out of Inuyasha, breaking the seal which
has kept him pinned to the tree in order to save her life. Inuyasha
comes alive and the adventure starts.
Inuyasha's main aim, before
he was sealed by the priestess Kikyou (and keeper of the Shikkon
no Tama), was to get hold of the Shikkon no Tama (a glass ball
full of power), in order to turn into a real demon, thus gaining
powers which were far stronger than the powers that he already
had. However, in his quest to get the Shikkon no Tama, Kikyou
stops him with her arrow and seals him away. On the same day that
Inuyasha is sealed, Kikyou loses her life and is cremated along
with the Shikkon no Tama.
When Kagome enters the world,
many people, especially Kaede (Kikyou's sister) believe that she
is the reincarnation of Kikyou, as Kagome has the Shikkon no Tama
within her body and possesses some powers. As soon as Kagome enters
the world, many demons begin to try and get the Shikkon no Tama
off her, and because of one demon, the Shikkon no Tama is broken
into thousands of shards, each shard having a lot of magical powers.
It is than Kagome's duty (she's the one who broke the Shikkon
no Tama into the shards by her arrow), and Inuyasha's duty, to
find all the shards of the Shikkon no Tama.
You may be wondering why
Inuyasha is actually following Kagome, the answer is is that Kagome
actually has a power over Inuyasha himself. The beads around his
neck act in accordance to Kagome's utterance of "osuwari!" (lit.
SIT!) causing Inuyasha to fall to the ground everytime she says
it (it's really funny :P). Also, it's said that Inuyasha actually
had feelings for Kikyou, and since Kagome is the reincarnation
of Kikyou, he protects her.
Anyway, this is a review
just for the first 8 episodes of the series, however, the first
episode left a lasting impression on me. I think it's a very good
series so far, and if you're a Rumiko Takahashi fan, this is a
must see, especially since the main voice actors are the same
as Ranma's (Kagome and Akane share the same voice, as does Inuyasha
and Ranma). There are many volumes of the manga, I'm not sure
how many there are exactly, but at least, in this anime, the drawings
are drawn to almost match Rumiko's style.
Animation is superb, and
the opening and ending music rock, and the jokes are funny too.
Check it out, I say!
