Vampire Princess Miyu is truly an anime which will startle the audience because it is so unlike any other anime seen. Even in the first episode of the series, the atmosphere of the anime can already be seen as dark and mysterious. Added to this is the effect of the wonderful background music in this anime to create the feel of something sinister.

Vampire Princess Miyu follows the life of the Guardian, Miyu, who was made into a vampire at the age of thirteen. Because of her fate, she is the successor of the Guardian, which is a vampire who's duty is to capture all of the stray Shinma (half- demon, half-god beings) and return them to the dark where they came from. To help her is her friend and protector, the Shinma Larva, who came to her side after they both defeated eachother and Larva came to know of Miyu's horrible destiny of loneliness. Larva helps Miyu defeat the stray Shinma, and serves as a comforter to Miyu and Larva is also the only "person" who can kill Miyu if she wishes to be free from her fate.

Miyu is unlike any other vampire in that she lives or is seen in the light, and that she also has a reflection in the mirror. Another difference with Miyu is that even though she feeds on blood, she gives the person who she feeds on 'eternal happiness', which means that the person will be free from any sadness or guilt. The people that Miyu feeds on are only those who want don't want to be alive anymore, suffering from sadness, etc.

The 26 episodes of the 1st season are very captivating. There's a different story in each episode, but again, the plot is the same: find the bad guys and kill them. But, in order to really benefit from the anime, you have to watch every single episode because the last two has a total twist in it which you would never imagine! I was totally shocked in the last 2 episodes and that was when I realised that the anime was ingenious.

Character designs are also good, and the story is very unique.Of course, everything that happens in that anime seems unrealistic, perhaps detracting a little from the anime as a whole. However, the suprise twist in the end will definately leave you thinking.
